about the exHibit

  • How can a place be both holy and shared? Usually, a shrine can only be inhabited by one religion. This exclusivity seems all the more demanding in the context of the three monotheisms. However, it is not uncommon for the faithful to temporarily cross religious boundaries to go and pray in the place of the other. Lacking a desire for conversion, they are in search of grace, and will ask for help from common holy figures (Abraham, Mary, Saint George, the Seven Sleepers). Reaching beyond theological divergences and interreligious conflicts, this photographic exhibition makes us (re)know the phenomenon of the frequentation of the same sanctuaries by faithful of different religions.

Curated by anthropologists Dionigi Albera and Manoël Pénicaud, this photographic series follows on from the exhibition Shared Sacred Sites (Mucem, Bardo Museum, Musée national de l'histoire de l'immigration, The New York Public Library).

  • On December 5, 2022, the opening, the exhibition was accompanied by a conference with the two curators and an introduction by Brigitte Marin, head of the Ecole Française de Rome.
